Frédérique Cambreling pursued graduate music studies in Paris, where she was particularly shaped by the guidance of Pierre Jamet. She won prizes at three international competitions: Paris 1976, Israel 1976 and at the Marie Antoinette Cazala Competition in 1977.
She was solo harpist at the Orchestre National de France from 1977 until 1985. Her musical career currently straddles the Ensemble intercontemporain, which she joined in 1993, and her soloist engagements. She is also a Professor at Musikene (Center for higher music education in the Basque country). Her eclecticism has led her to participate in chamber music festivals all across Europe.
Several composers have dedicated their works to her, and she has performed in premieres such as Offrande for solo harp by Michael Jarrell, Die Stücke des Sängers for solo harp and ensemble by Wolfgang Rihm (conducted by Pierre Boulez), Hélios for solo harp and orchestra by Philippe Schoeller with the Orchestre National de Lyon (conducted by David Robertson). In October 2003, she was invited by the SWR Orchestra to perform Chemin I in homage to its composer Luciano Berio.
Frédérique Cambreling has made numerous recordings, both in classical and contemporary music.
