In the summer of 1943, composer Viktor Ullmann and young poet Peter Kien collaborated to create The Emperor of Atlantis (subtitled Death Abdicates) under the terrible conditions of the Theresienstadt ghetto. In what would later be considered a twentieth-century masterpiece in its genre, Ullmann and Kien dared to denounce the violence of the Third Reich and its delirious ideology. Together they composed this work, which offers a stirring look at the life of the suffering masses, victims of injustice.
From the start of composition, the work was censured several times by the Jewish ghetto authorities. Adjustments and changes had to be made in the text to placate the Jewish leaders, who feared the SS's possible retaliation. Serious rehearsals began in September of 1944 with Rafael Schacter as orchestra conductor and Karl Meinhard as choral director.
Despite the changes, the SS officials who witnessed the dress rehearsal perfectly understood the opera's message as well as the personification of the Führer in the delirious Overall. The Emperor of Atlantis was immediately banned and Ullman and Kien were arrested, as were the singers, orchestra musicians and their relatives along with them. All of them were immediately transported to Auschwitz and murdered. Only the composition survived. After a long, painstaking process to revise the sources and manuscripts, the opera premiered in Amsterdam in 1975. It has been performed all around the world since then, achieving fame and resounding acclaim from the public and critics.
Ensemble Kuraia de Bilbao es un conjunto instrumental especializado en la música clásica contemporánea y del siglo XX. Se fundó en 1997, en el marco de la asociación Kuraia, para difundir las obras de los compositores actuales y dotarles de un conjunto profesional de excelente calidad con el cual colaborar estrechamente. Desde 2005 hasta hoy, este conjunto ha experimentado un aumento de su plantilla así como un crecimiento de su actividad. Sus miembros destacan por la brillantez de su técnica y hondas cualidades musicales contrastadas por una sólida trayectoria profesional y solística. El Ensemble Kuraia adopta una formación variable desde el sexteto hasta los quince músicos, según las exigencias del repertorio. Su repertorio incluye las obras maestras del siglo XX, la música de afirmados compositores actuales y obras de jóvenes compositores. Ha actuado fuera y dentro del Estado. Algunas de sus actuaciones han sido grabadas por RNE y transmitidas por EITB. También ha participado en la realización de los documentales sobre Luis De Pablo (Luis De Pablo: Evolución hacia el siglo XXI) y Félix Ibarrondo (Homenaje a Félix Ibarrondo) producidos respectivamente en 2000 y 2004. El Ensemble Kuraia ha dedicado conciertos monográficos a Luis De Pablo, Joan Guinjoan, Félix Ibarrondo, José Manuel López López, pudiendo colaborar personalmente con ellos en la realización de los mismos. Solistas y directores como Pierre Strauch, Manlio Benzi y Juanjo Mena también han colaborado en conciertos del Ensemble Kuraia. Desde su creación colabora con importantes instituciones culturales como la Universidad del País Vasco, Museo Guggenheim-Bilbao, Universidad de Deusto y Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao. Entre sus últimas actuaciones, cabe destacar el estreno de la obra Hamar de Gabriel Erkoreka (en ocasión del Xº Aniversario del Museo Guggenheim), un concierto dedicado a compositores vascos en el 14º Ciclo de Música Contemporánea de Málaga y una extensa gira en Perú.
